The Northwoods Land Trust will co-host an outdoor workshop and field day Oct. 2 on assessing old-growth forest characteristics and identifying fungi. The Old-Growth Forest Network and Wisconsin Mycological Society are partnering with NWLT to host workshop from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.at the Holmboe Conifer Forest State Natural Area in Rhinelander. According to an NWLT press release, participants will receive training from local experts on how to use iNaturalist and specialized equipment to delineate, measure and map old-growth characteristics in a hemlock-dominated forest, and how to identify the different fungi that call these forests home. Participants will then utilize this knowledge to collect data, walking on and off trail for approximately two miles on undulating and uneven terrain. The event is open to everybody and is free to attend. Advanced registration is required and space is limited. To sign up, go online to www.northwoodslandtrust.org and click on “News and Events” or email Frank Schroyer at frank@northwoodslandtrust.org by September 30. Though not required for participation, attendees interested in recording observations to iNaturalist should bring a fully charged smartphone or tablet with the iNaturalist app downloaded. Northwoods Land Trust permanently conserves natural shorelands, woodlands and other natural resources to benefit present and future generations in Vilas, Oneida, Forest, Florence, Iron, Price and
