The Rhinelander High School boys soccer team played four games last week, going 1-1-2 with a shootout loss, a home win, a tie and a lopsided loss in a Saturday quad meet.The Hodags opened the week Tuesday at Mosinee in a Great Northern Conference match that ended regulation scoreless. With no overtime permitted in conference play, the match went to a shootout, with each team sending five shooters to the penalty spot. Both teams converted three of their first five attempts, forcing sudden death. Mosinee scored on its sixth attempt; Rhinelander’s sixth shooter was blocked, giving Mosinee the extra point in the conference standings with a final shootout score of 4-3.
The Hodags bounced back Thursday at Mike Webster Stadium, beating Medford 2-1. Asher Rivord scored on a rebound in the first half to open the scoring. In the second half, foreign exchange student Jaime Nieto Bergo scored on a header to secure the win.
Rhinelander hosted a four-team meet Saturday with Waupaca, Shawano and Lakeland. Lakeland and Rhinelander each played both Waupaca and Shawano.
The Hodags tied Waupaca 0-0, then fell to Shawano 3-0, with Shawano scoring all three goals in the first half. The Hodags travel to Merrill on Tuesday before returning home to host Northland Pines on Thursday.
