Letter: Taxpayers should attend open book meeting by Kristina Ostermann
Editor:
I would like to remind Oneida County taxpayers to attend their town/city open book meeting to review the tax roll if they question the assessed value of their property. If you are not satisfied with the outcome at the open book meeting, then you can appeal the assessment at the board of review, which is a panel of your local officials.
These meetings will be listed in your local papers and posted at your town/city hall. Your town/city clerk or your assessor will also know the date and time of these meetings.
The law requires a precise order to follow and specific information to be presented when appealing your assessment. For more information on the subject, you can download a PDF file from the Department of Revenue called Property Assessment Appeal Guide for Wisconsin Real Property Owners at wi.gov.
Once the board of review certifies the assessment roll and adjourns their meeting, no further changes can be made. It is important to act now to adjust your assessment because it is too late when you receive your tax bill to object to assessments and taxes.
