GIRLS BASKETBALL: Thunderbirds edge Hodags, 65-63
RHS drops to 6-2 in GNC

Close didn’t count in the win column Friday night when the Rhinelander High School varsity girls basketball team lost its Great Northern Conference game by two points at league-leading Lakeland Union High School, 65-63.
A key statistic in the game’s outcome was free-throw percentage with the Hodags making fewer than half of their shots (9-22). The Thunderbirds had half as many attempts and made 63.6 percent (7-11).
RHS had three players end up scoring in double figures. Kenedy Van Zile had a team-high 24 points, which included four 3-pointers, followed by Ally Seefeldt with 15 points and Maddie Meyer scoring 12 more.
LUHS’s three players scoring in double figures included Melissa Bruckner with a game-high 25 points, which included three 3-pointers, followed by Abby Parris with 13 points and Olivia Killian with 10 points.
The Hodags dropped their season record to 6-2 in the GNC, tied with Medford for second in league play, and 9-8 overall. The Thunderbirds improved to 8-0 in the GNC and 13-5 overall.
Up next for RHS is a non-conference home game Monday night against Crandon before hosting Northland Pines in league play this Friday.
