Nicolet College, ArtStart partner to advance arts and culture
Nicolet College and ArtStart are excited to announce an innovative partnership designed to advance community arts and cultural development in northern Wisconsin.
“By working together, we realized that we could accomplish far more than what each of us could on our own,” said Sandy Bishop, Nicolet executive director for Economic and Community Development.
“We believe that a lively arts presence in Northwoods communities improves quality of life and also promotes community and economic development by helping attract new businesses and residents to the area.”
The partnership will create a new position at ArtStart to manage the day-to-day operations of the Nicolet College Art Galley and oversee cultural projects at ArtStart, on the Nicolet Campus, and in area communities.
Melinda Childs, ArtStart’s current development director, has been selected to fill this new position. Once Childs assumes her new duties, ArtStart will seek a new development director.
“Many individuals have for some time recognized the need to coordinate cultural resources as a direct strategy to promote community development in the region,” Childs said. “At the same time, Nicolet College recognized the need to branch out and better incorporate their cultural activities into communities as a means of enriching student-learning experiences. This new position will lead both of those efforts.”
As for the Nicolet Art Gallery, Bishop stressed that the gallery will remain under the direction of the college and continue to offer a variety of arts-based exhibitions along with hosting the annual Northern National Art Competition.
“Arts and culture have been an integral part of Nicolet since its inception,” Bishop explained. “That long-standing tradition will continue and grow as this new partnership will allow the college to expand programming and opportunities for students, faculty, and the communities we serve.”
