GIRLS TENNIS: Hodags sweep Phillips, improve to 7-1 in GNC
STAR JOURNAL REPORT
For the second time this season, the Rhinelander High School girls tennis team has recorded a 7-0 Great Northern Conference dual meet sweep over Phillips.
“We went about our business in a focused fashion,” said RHS head coach Bob Heideman. “The girls know what’s at stake (in the conference race for first place with Antigo, which is 8-1 in the GNC).
In the five contested matches Tuesday, when the No. 4 singles and No. 3 doubles matches had been forfeited by Phillips, the Hodags won all five matches in straight sets with Alex Oestreich (No. 2 singles), Emma Roberts (No. 3 singles) and Haley Seefeldt and Livi Roberts (No. 1 doubles) all not losing a game. RHS’s No. 1 singles player, Belinda Weddle, defeated Maria Surman, 6-0, 6-1, and the No. 2 doubles pair of Madi Losch and Alexi Pyrchalla beat Katie Chapman and Trinity Pesko, 6-2, 6-0.
“Emma Roberts learned she can hit two first serves and not double fault,” Heideman said. “Our doubles teams moved to the middle better.”
The Hodags’ season record stands at 7-1 in the GNC and 13-6 overall going into Thursday’s home conference dual meet against Lakeland Union High School.
