Obituary: Janice Marie Hurlbutt
Janice Marie Hurlbutt, age 82, of Rhinelander, died April 21, 2016, at her home, surrounded by her family. She was born August 18, 1933 to Richard and Stella (Mills) Brandt in Merrill. She attended schools in Merrill graduating from the Merrill High School in 1951. Jan then attended UW-Stevens Point and received her teaching degree. It was while she was teaching in Mole Lake that Jan supposedly asked Claude “Fats” Hurlbutt to marry her. He said yes and they were married on January 29, 1955 in Merrill. They moved to Rhinelander shortly thereafter and have lived here since.
Jan retired from teaching to raise her family. She loved her “new job” as mother and then grandmother. Her children and grandchildren came before anything else in her life, even Fats. Jan was fun to be around. She and Fat’s enjoyed many good times together, as did anyone who was privileged to be with them. They enjoyed a great sense of humor and were a perfect match for each other.
Jan did have many other interests which included golfing, bridge, cooking, painting and playing the piano. She had been a member of the First Congregational Church and enjoyed being a part of the bell choir.
Jan is survived by her husband Claude “Fats” Hurlbutt; her daughters Sherry Hurlbutt, Terry (Frank) Cinko and Paula Dellenbach, all of Rhinelander; her grandchildren, Beau, Goldie, Mathew, Tyler, Aubree and Katie, her great-grandchildren, Kaiden, Ava and Dominic, other family and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and her grandson Joey.
Memorial services for Jan will be held Thursday, April 28 at 11 a.m. at the Carlson Funeral Home with Chaplain John Uhlarik officiating. Visitation will be from 9 until 11 a.m. also on Thursday also at the Carlson Funeral Home. Interment will be in the Northland Memorial Park Cemetery.
