Obituary: Evelyn Gillis
Evelyn “Nana” A. (Hakes) Gillis, age 86 of Rhinelander died Sunday, November 15, 2015 the day the Good Lord decided it was time to take her home. She was born August 15, 1929 in Cudahy to Fritz and Mildred (Mommaerts) Hakes. She attended Green Bay West High School graduating in 1948. Evelyn married the love of her life, Cletus J. Gillis on June 24, 1950. They were married for 64 years. She was the co-owner of Bramies Restaurant in Green Bay. Evelyn was a Den Mother with the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts for many years, which her sons participated in. The family moved to Rhinelander in 1969 and she was employed in Food Service for many years. She was known as the “Lunch Lady” at the old Junior High, and was a Cook at the Pied Piper, Fireside, Pinewood Lodge, and then was employed in the Deli Department at Ray’s Castle Foods. Evelyn was a member of Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Church. For many years, Evelyn worked at the Bazaars and fish fry’s at the church. She was an avid quilter. Each one of her children were blessed with a masterpiece. Evelyn had been a member of the Knights of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary. Evelyn is survived by her sons; David (Peggy) Gillis of Escanaba, Michigan, Steven (Barb) Gillis of Ypsilanti, Michigan, and Daniel (Jodi) Gillis of Rhinelander, Daughters; Paulette (Jack) Cooper of Wheat Ridge, Colorado, Denise (Jack) Chariton of Rhinelander and Michelle (Randy) Beard of Rhinelander. She has been blessed with fifteen grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. She is further survived by cousins, nieces, nephews, and other family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband; Cletus J. Gillis, her parents, and her sister; Carol Plannert. The visitation for Evelyn will be held on Thursday evening, November 19, 2015 from 4-7 p.m. at the Hildebrand Russ Funeral Home. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday morning, November 20, 2015 at 11:30 a.m. at Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Church, (St. Mary’s site) with Fr. James Hoffman officiating.
