Birds return to brighten the forest
This male rose-breasted grosbeak is taking a break at a bird feeder. This bird likes to spend most of its time in the upper canopy of trees, during the summer, and its song is very similar to the robin’s song which can be confusing. One can see by this picture just why the species is called a “grosbeak.” His massive beak is great for breaking into the hardest of seeds. Photographer Gary Garton says the grosbeak is one of our more common summer birds and the woods would be way too quiet and much less pleasant without them. Photo by Gary Garton
