Rhinelander Police Bicycle Safety Initiative underway
The Rhinelander Police Department wants to encourage all kids to use bicycle helmets to enhance their safety when riding their bikes. In 2012, 726 cyclists were killed, and 49,000 were injured in bicycle accidents in the United States. The primary way to protect children from head injuries is to utilize a bicycle helmet.
The Rhinelander Police Department, in concert with local businesses, has begun its second annual bicycle safety initiative.
The program, called “Safety is Sweet,” will promote the use of helmets amongst the community’s bicycling youth. Rhinelander Police Officers will be giving free treat certificates to youth in the city of Rhinelander who are caught wearing their helmets.
As a precautionary measure, the department would like to remind parents and youth of the importance of bicycle safety and recognition of local ordinances. Police Officers will not be able to stop to provide certificates when responding to an emergency or a call for service.
