Volunteers needed for Meals on Wheels route in Rhinelander
The practical trend has been going toward helping older adults age in place, staying in their own home as long as possible. One program that permits that to happen is Meals on Wheels.
The client base for the Home Delivered Meal program through the Oneida Senior Center has risen to more than 100 in the last several months. The organization needs to start another route but needs a few more volunteer drivers to do it. The goal is to start a short route in Rhinelander to limit other routes to no more than one and one half hours.
All that is needed is a reliable vehicle, insurance and a good driving record. Volunteers are paid $0.56 a mile per route. To get familiar with a route, new drivers are encouraged to ride along with a seasoned volunteer to see how it’s done. Meal routes go out at 10:30 am.
Home delivered meals provide older home bound adults a hot meal five days a week along with a safety check. This program provides good nutrition and peace of mind to the customers and their families.
The volunteer escort program is another driving opportunity that provides transportation to older adults and people with disabilities for medical and other appointments. This service goes beyond the scope of the in-town weekday bus service.
Volunteers are also needed in the kitchen for the Senior Dining Program.
