Letter: Opposition to school vouchers by Dick and Gail Gumness
Editor:
(Letter to Rep. Rob Swearingen and Sen. Tom Tiffany)
We heard that support for the Governor’s education budget is crumbling. We are writing you to join the “crumbling support” today.
We need to raise (not lower, not freeze) the revenue limits on Wisconsin’s budget for education because if we do not, it means more “hurt” for our schools. We already do not have enough money since Walker’s first cuts on education; more teacher layoffs; no new textbooks; asking our schools to again do more for less. Where is this going????
We do not want you to support vouchers. Some things to consider: special needs students in private schools are no longer guaranteed service and must surrender their legal rights guaranteed them under the Disabilities Act; the proposed budget increases dollars for the voucher schools by $1,400 and $0 income for public school students; many voucher schools do not have to be accountable for their programs.
We will be watching very closely as this comes to a vote and we ask you to listen to your voters….
Thank you.
Dick and Gail Gumness, Woodruff
