RHS mock trial team wins regional championship
Rhinelander High School broke its own state record this past weekend at the Wood County courthouse in Wisconsin Rapids, capturing its 27th consecutive regional mock trial championship. The tournament was power-paired, resulting in a match between the only two undefeated teams in the final round, Rhinelander #1 and Wisconsin Rapids #1. RHS #1 prevailed, with a split decision win.
Rounding out the top five teams in the tournament were Marshfield #1, Lakeland and Rhinelander #2. Other teams participating in the competition were Stratford #1 and #2, Wisconsin Rapids #2, Marshfield #2, Merrill and Phillips. The tournament was sponsored by the Wisconsin Law Foundation and was coordinated by attorney Richard Weymouth of Wisconsin Rapids.
Members of RHS #1 are seniors Matt Anderson, Amber Toboyek, Melissa Sheth, Elisha Sheffer and Lauren Sexton, and juniors Lydia O’Brien and Amber Sheth.
Members of RHS #2 are sophomores Mike Anderson and Erin Tenderholt, and freshman Anna Catlin, Emily Ditzler, Jared Hoha, Faith Carris and Bethany Stelbrink.
The RHS teams are coached by Kathy Vick-Martini, attorney Jim Jacobi and Oneida County Circuit Court Judge Michael Bloom.
The Rhinelander #1 team will now advance to the state mock trial tournament in Madison on March 10-11. The past 29 years since the program’s inception, teams from Rhinelander have won the state championship 15 times, including six of the last 10 years. Approximately 100 teams statewide are competing in the tournament this year.
