Hope. I hope for many things, but after 41 years on this planet I have come to the realization that hope only becomes tangible if hope has an army of people to back it up. Sometimes hope has strong leaders. Leaders who are supposed to defend those who cannot defend themselves.
I contacted two local leaders recently. One addressed my concerns via a phone conversation. It was a pleasant conversation. He agreed that the School District of Rhinelander’s February 19th referendum is needed, but would not openly support it. This is a bipartisan issue for Northwoods schools regardless of what you want to believe, but it’s clear to me that the cavalry isn’t coming from Madison to save any of the schools in the Northwoods. The real issue is the Funding Formula, but because noisier folks in the south have a bigger voting voice, the Northwoods is left to fend for itself.
Districts have cut costs, corners, programs, and their biggest expense, personnel. The average teacher in the Rhinelander School District has seen an 8% pay cut in take home pay since February 2011. A cut whose brunt will likely have been felt by local businesses. If $4 million per year is to be absorbed by the School District of Rhinelander’s teachers, which has been suggested by some, each teacher will be required to take a $22,371 pay cut. Plunging many below the poverty level.
For me, it is an easy choice. I am investing in education and more specifically, children. $16.67 per month on a $190,500 home for the next three years is a small price to pay. The alternative is far more expensive to the long term success of Rhinelander. I will be able to look directly in the eyes of my 9 year old daughter and 5 year old son and tell them that I did what I could. Whether you are for, against, or still undecided about the referendum on February 19th, please get the facts. Make an informed decision and look beyond the moment.
The tangible army coming to save the School District of Rhinelander is me, you, your neighbors and the people you work beside everyday. It is up to you and me to stand guard over our children and their educational opportunities, because they can’t fend for themselves against the might of Madison and political bickering. Be hope. Vote yes.
