Eighth grade girls basketball team shines
The eighth grade girls traveling basketball team has finished their last season of club ball with an exciting 1st place win at a tournament in Mosinee. The Hodags defeated Mosinee, Wausau West, Wausau Newman and the Eau Claire Shamrocks. The girls knocked out an undefeated Eau Claire team in overtime, winning 46-44. The Hodag girls have finished their season with a record of 23 and 1 for the Great Northern League and finished with a 26 and 4 record overall, including the State League Championship Tournament. The girls are on a hot streak and hope to continue it into school ball. The girls have won 16 straight games.
The Hodag girls will move into their school ball season this week and will rejoin as a traveling team in March to prepare for state in Stevens Point on the weekend of April 5. This is our second trip to state and to qualify, teams are ranked against other teams in their division throughout the state. If you qualify in the top 32, you get an invitation to participate. Our girls are ranked 19th this year and it is based on how they performed throughout our season last year. They look at wins and losses, how many first places we got in our tournaments and the level of competition. We have done very well and our record this year is 23 and 1 for the Great Northern League. We also participated in the league championship tournament over in Chippewa Falls in November and went 3-3 losing to Onalaska, White Bear Lake, Minn., and Durand. That was a tough tournament and we played schools from all different divisions. Onalaska is the No. 1 team and we were competitive with them. It was an awesome tournament.
We have a special group of girls. They work very hard and they want to get better. They’re competitive, they push each other, and they want to win. They’re good kids and they are so fun to work with. It’s so exciting to see the girls earn these opportunities. All their hard work and efforts are being rewarded. We’re so proud of them!
