Letter: We are Mitt Romney’s 47 percent by Dick and Gail Gumness
Editor:
We had to wait until today in order to read and hear in the media that Mr. Romney actually said what we heard him say yesterday on television. That’s how unbelievable this is.
A video filmed in May was released last week. It is of Mr. Romney speaking back in May to a closed meeting of rich donors. He began to define the 47 percent (his number) of voters that back President Obama. He said, “These are voters who back President Obama, no matter what. They are dependent on government and believe they are victims, entitled to health care, food stamps, Medicare, Medicaid, housing and they take no responsibility for their own welfare. They do not pay taxes.”
He added that he was not going to try and change their minds or get their votes because it would be useless to try. “I’ll never convince them that they have to help themselves,” he said. “My job is not to worry about them.”
These are his beliefs. He, in fact, is only reiterating an agenda that Republicans stand for in this election: “Forget the Middle Class, they will not vote for us.”
Here is a candidate who has open disdain and contempt of 47 percent (his number) of the people of our nation.
When he defines the Middle Class, he means all of us…adults, children, seniors, those on Medicaid and Medicare, students looking for loans for college, the military, including those serving in Afghanistan, veterans, workers of all stripes-union, non-union, factory, mill, teachers, service givers, family farmers, unemployed…everyday people who are proud to be citizens of this country.
He forgets one elementary fact-our Middle Class is the strength and backbone of the U.S. His campaign has ignored us from the beginning.
Last week he released the very first ad that tells how he will help the Middle Class. Too little to late. You can fool some of the people some of the time, but you can’t fool all of the people all of the time.
We can decide to ignore these facts…but they will not change…or we can recognize that it is President Obama who, in these last four years, has consistently worked to further the Middle Class.
Get the facts straight and vote to re-elect our president for another four years.
