Letter: Republicans never supported Obama by John Kocovsky
Editor:
I read Gloria Lowe’s letter “President is one using race card” (Viewpoint, Sept. 9) and checked the YouTube website to which she directed readers. This is her proof of racism? What is her point? A candidate is guilty of racism if he appeals to his racial demographic? Well, that would mean Romney exhibits racism when he appeals to rich old Caucasians. I’m not saying it, but I think what Gloria exhibits is an example of Projection Psychology: the unconscious attribution of a personal thought, feeling, or impulse, especially one considered undesirable, onto somebody else.
The number of websites, bloggers, talk show jocks and GOP officials that have teed off on President Obama and at times Michelle Obama is legion. They have been relentless with their thinly veiled assorted borderline racist digs, taunts and depictions. (Type “GOP racial slurs against president Obama” into Google and check for yourself.) This is illustrative of “dog whistle politics” such as “no one’s ever asked to see my birth certificate,” “he doesn’t love America as we do,” and “food stamps president” all sending a racist message to certain voters without actually coming out and saying it. All this from the “Big Tent” party of which 87 percent of Republicans are white; whose minority delegate representation at the convention was just two percent of over 5,000 convention delegates and were only two black members comprised the 165-member RNC. Or as Lindsey Graham said “We’re not generating enough angry white guys to stay in business for the long term.”
I imagine it was with a sigh of relief that white Republicans heard Romney say that he had wanted Obama to succeed because he wanted America to succeed. Really? Reality check! This is the party which got together on the night of Obama’s inauguration, had legislators from both houses agreeing to stay “united with unyielding opposition to the president’s economic policies.” True to that agreement, they obstructed, blocked and did everything in their power to, as Mitch McConnell proudly stated, “my single most important goal is to make Barack Obama a one-term president.” Remember, even with the country on the brink of default, their position was to oppose everything and stick him with the blame. Their brinkmanship resulted in the 2012 S&P downgrade of America’s debt, but it played into their political strategy. Win at any cost, the country be damned.
