Letter: Local businesses should market Hodag by Louise Stroede
Editor:
How nice it was to see that the new Wisconsin Journeys Magazine has our famous Hodag on the cover, especially after the experience I had this summer in trying to find a simple postcard of the Hodag for a Florida visitor to our city.
It is refreshing to see this type of publicity for Rhinelander. After this visitor had gone one day with her cousin and couldn’t find a Hodag postcard, I offered to take her another two days to shop, as she wanted some other souvenirs. She found T-shirts, key rings and magnets, but not one postcard featuring a Hodag.
The Chamber was out, and had been for two weeks. They made the comment, “We should really order some.” I have worked in the downtown area for 50 years, and most stores in the downtown area used to all carry postcards, especially the “Hodag.” The Logging Museum had nothing there, either.
If Rhinelander merchants aren’t going to promote the Hodag City, why should anyone else? By the way, I believe there is also talk of a movie coming out on the Hodag, which would be worldwide! Thanks to the outside media for their interest!
Maybe we should have gone to Minocqua, Woodruff or Lake Tomahawk to look. It’s tourist season for goodness sake! This happened in August.
Louise Stroede, Rhinelander
