St. Matthias’ Church launches Diversity Decal campaign

The St. Francis Project, the social justice arm of St. Matthias’ Episcopal Church in Minocqua, has produced decals and window clings designed to promote harmony and reduce divisions in the community. The decals are available free of charge at the St. Matthias’ Church office, St. Matthias’ Thrift Shop and St. Matthias’ Furniture Annex, as well as at the Woodland Art Center in Lac du Flambeau.

The decal project grew out of a survey of the St. Matthias congregation 18 months ago. Those surveyed placed a high priority on reducing racial tensions in the community. As a first step in this effort, the St. Francis Project launched the diversity decal campaign. In spring 2012, a design contest was held and the winning design, by a local resident, was chosen from among several entries.

“We wanted a symbol that would indicate acceptance, love, welcome and peace to people of all races, creeds, religious beliefs and orientations,” said Susan Brandt, a St. Francis project member and chair of the artwork selection committee. The decal shows four arms, white, red, black and yellow, representing the four races, joined together in a circle.

The decals and window clings will be provided free of charge, so that everyone can have access to them. Free will donations of any amount will be accepted.
