Historic buildings and signage

Rhinelander's Historic Preservation Committee would like to recognize those businesses that have made improvements to the signage of their business establishments in the downtown district: Pat's Tavern, Forth Floral, Heath's Barber Shop, WXPR Public Radio, Sand Creek Consultants and Rhinelander Brewing Company LLC.

Protecting Rhinelander's Historic District is a public responsibility. Historic preservation means preserving the character of Rhinelander.

The beauty of downtown Rhinelander is its diversity, its evolution, its evocation of local history.

The Guidelines for signage in the Downtown District according to the National Trust - Main Street program are:

• Use painted wood where practicable. It is the authentic material and will look appropriate against the weathered brick of most commercial facades. Modern materials that simulate wood may be acceptable.

• Neon may be used as an interior window sign only.

• Backlit and internally lit signs are not appropriate

• Supporting brackets for projecting signs should be metal, painted black.

• Installation of any signage or graphics must have a minimal impact on the building and must allow the building to return to its original condition upon signage removal.

• Reuse of existing mounting brackets, studs or holes is desirable.

• Never drill holes into bricks, stones, etc.

The committee is happy to see interest in restoring community pride, improving downtown's image and enhancing the appearance and condition of the downtown area's unique buildings.
