Nicolet Players auditions Sept. 10, 11
The Nicolet Players community theater troupe will hold auditions Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 10 and 11, for upcoming productions of the comedy “Over the River and Through the Woods.”
The play has roles for six individuals: a man and a woman in their late 20s and four grandparents.
The story swirls around carefree Nick, a single, Italian-American guy from New Jersey.
When his parents retire to Florida, Nick settles into the routine of staying close to family by having dinner every Sunday with his grandparents. Then one day the company he works for offers him his dream job as a marketing executive. The catch: it’s across the country in Seattle.
The news doesn’t sit well at all with the grandparents and they quickly devise a scheme and play matchmaker by inviting the lovely – and single – Caitlin O’Hare over for Sunday dinner.
“This is when things get crazy and comedy ensues as the grandparents pull out all the stops and do everything they can to make the two a romantic couple with hopes Nick will stay in New Jersey,” said Nicolet College Theatre Director Jim Nuttall.
Written by Joe DiPietro, the acclaimed play enjoyed a run of more than 800 performances over two years at the esteemed John Houseman Theatre in New York City.
Nuttall noted that actors eyeing a grandparent part do not need to be grandparent age. “With makeup we can age most people over 40 to look the part,” he said.
As always, everyone is welcome to audition. Those interested do not need any acting experience and they do not need to be Nicolet students. No preparation is required, but actors are typically better prepared if they have read the script beforehand, Nuttall added. Scripts are available for a three-day checkout from the Richard J. Brown Library, located in the Lakeside Center on the Nicolet Campus.
Cast members will need to be available Sept. 12 to Nov. 1 for rehearsals, which run from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. typically about four nights a week. Performances are scheduled for Nov. 2 to 4 and Nov. 8 to 11.
