Hodag boys tennis defeats Lakeland in opener
STAR JOURNAL REPORT
The Hodag tennis team began the season with a 6-1 win over Lakeland Union at the old tennis courts at RHS. Coach Bob Heideman remarked that he liked what he saw for the first meet of the season.
“Overall a good start but needless to say we saw a lot that needs to be cleaned up before West on Friday,” Heideman stated. “I’m sure all the spring coaches are saying the same thing, it is very exciting to be outside playing.”
No. 1 singles Markus Johnson defeated Lakeland’s Aaron Petersen in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.
“Markus had a close match. The two sets followed a similar pattern,” Heideman noted. “Tied at 4-4, Markus broke serve to go up 5-4 and closed it out on his serve. He kept the pressure on with his serve and showed signs of hitting aggressively.”
On the doubles side, Logan Oestreich and Cade Aschenbrenner stepped up to varsity play with their first win at No. 4 doubles.
