The Rhinelander High School varsity football team wasn’t able to get on the scoreboard until the final quarter Friday night when the Hodags lost their Great Northern Conference opener at Medford, 36-7.
RHS trailed 21-0 at halftime after giving up three rushing touchdowns with Garrett Hill scoring from 49 yards and a yard away and Ben Lindgren also running into the end zone from a yard away.
The Raiders extended their lead to 36-0 in the third quarter after Hill added a touchdown run of 52 yards and Ean Wilson ran into the end zone from 5 yards away.
The Hodags snapped the shutout with 8:29 left in the fourth quarter when Logan Freund connected on a 36-yard touchdown pass to Brad Comer. Joseph Schmitz added the extra point.
Medford outgained RHS in total offense, 381-89 yards, with the Raiders’ entire yardage coming on the ground and all the Hodags’ net yards in the air.
Two Medford players ran for more than 100 yards each with Hill running for 200 yards and three touchdowns on 17 carries and Wilson rushing for 110 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries.
Freund completed seven of 16 passes for 89 yards and a touchdown.
With the loss, RHS’s season record dropped to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in the GNC going into this coming Friday conference game at home against Antigo.
