CROSS COUNTRY: Alayna Franson runner-up at Chargers Invite
Hodag boys 7th, girls 8th

For the third time in the three meets the Rhinelander High School cross country teams have competed in this season, senior Alayna Franson has finished runner-up.
Franson was 3.95 seconds off the winning pace in the girls race at Tuesday’s Wittenberg-Birnamwood Chargers Invitational that was won by Iola-Scandinavia senior Erika Kisting in 20:09.63. The top-two runners were more than 30 seconds ahead of the rest of the field of 140 finishers on the 5,000-meter course with Iola-Scandinavia junior Jada Beacom placing third in 20:43.89.
The Hodag girls, who placed eighth out of 14 teams with 171 points, had one other runner finish in the top 20 with senior Anna Sturzl coming in 16th in 22:23.44. RHS’s other three runners whose finishes counted toward the team score included: junior Allie Fugle, 42nd in 24:22.31; freshman Abigale Henrichs, 45th in 24:27.22; and sophomore Valerie Dalka, 67th in 25:50.24.
Rosholt won the girls team title with the top score of 71, followed by Bonduel (102), Wittenberg-Birnamwood (122), Seymour (143) and Mosinee (144) rounding out the top five.
MARKUS JOHNSON 13TH
The Hodag boys, who finished seventh out of 14 teams with 177 points, also had two runners place in the top 20.
RHS senior Markus Johnson came in 13th in 18:48.64 with sophomore Daniel Ritchie placing 19th overall in 19:09.73. The other three Hodag boys making up the team’s top five included: freshman Jacob Weddle, 31st in 19:46.61; freshman JC Adams, 56th in 20:34.77; and sophomore Abe Laggis, 73rd in 21:35.2.
Two Rosholt runners finished in the top two with junior Adam Rzentkowski winning in 16:48.63 and senior Dausen Anderson placing runner-up in 17:39.03. Iola-Scandinavia senior Joe Makovec came in third in 17:58.87.
Rosholt also won the boys team title with 29 points, followed by Shawano (99), Bonduel (118), Seymour (128) and Mosinee (131) in the top five.
RHS’s next meet is scheduled for Sept. 16 when the Smiley Invitational will be held at the Tribute Golf Course in Wausau.
