HIGH SCHOOL GYMNASTICS: Hodags’ season ends at D2 Sectional

The Rhinelander High School gymnasts ended their season Thursday when no one on the team qualified for state in the WIAA Division 2 Sectional at Antigo.
RHS placed sixth out of the eight teams competing at the sectional, while the team’s best individual finish in the four events was 10th place and no one finished the all-around competition in the top 10.
The sectional’s top-two teams along with the top-five individuals in the four events and the top-five individuals in the all-around competition all advanced to the State Tournament March 3-4 at Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln.
Hodags junior Makayla Kuester placed 10th on the uneven bars (6.85) and tied for 12th with sophomore teammate Raven Sturtevant in the floor exercise (7.85).
RHS’s best showings in the other two events came from Kuester placing 15th in vaulting (8.25) and Sturtevant finishing 15th on the balance beam (7.6).
Sturtevant ended up 11th in the all-around competition (29.5).
Ashland senior Shelby Rust, who won the all-around competition (35.05), also placed first in the floor exercise (8.95), vaulting (9.05) and balance beam (9.35). Rice Lake junior Ellie Van Gilder won on the uneven bars (8.075).
Ashland topped the team standings with 135.575 points, while Antigo also advanced its entire team to state after finishing runner-up with 128.575.
