BOYS HOCKEY: Hodags lose in OT to LUHS, 3-2
STAR JOURNAL REPORT
After falling behind by two goals Thursday night, the Rhinelander High School varsity boys hockey team was able to even the score before losing its Great Northern Conference road game in overtime to Lakeland Union High School, 3-2.
“That was our third trip to overtime this year, all with the same results,” said Hodags head coach M.J. Laggis. “I hope we get another opportunity in overtime before this season is over, because I know we have it in us.”
Neither team was able to get on the scoreboard until more than 9 minutes into the scoreboard. The Thunderbirds then scored twice in less than 3 minutes with goals from Max Wohlleber and Beau Ertl.
RHS was able to tie the game before the second period expired with a pair of goals from Dylan Roeser both assisted by Freddie Wisner.
“Our kids battled hard from down 2-0 to come back,” Laggis said. “It was a great effort, but we made some defensive zone mistakes that we need to get better at and we will.”
After a scoreless third period, Wohlleber tallied game-winning goal for LUHS just under 4 minutes into overtime.
Shots on goal favored the Thunderbirds, 25-23. Nathan Pitek stopped 21 shots to pick up the win in net for LUHS. Cody Pratz made 22 saves in a losing effort in goal for the Hodags.
The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for RHS, which dropped to 2-9 in the GNC and 6-11 overall going into Saturday’s road game against Merrill. The Hodags and Thunderbirds face each other again Monday night at the Rhinelander Ice Arena.
