BOYS SWIMMING: Hodags tie for 4th at own relays

The Rhinelander High School boys swimming team recorded four top-three finishes out of 10 relay events Saturday when the Hodags tied for fourth in the eight-team relay meet they hosted.

Green Bay United finished first with 160 points, followed by Lakeland Union High School at 118 and Tomahawk coming in third at 80. RHS tied with Marshfield for fourth at 78. Shawano placed sixth at 72, Superior came in seventh at 70 and Rice Lake finished eighth at 48.

The Hodags’ best finish in the relay events came from Russell Benoy, Matthew O’Melia and Martin Hoger placing second in the 3×50-yard “mixer” relay (1 minute, 26.41 seconds).

Two of RHS’s three third-place finishes were also in relays comprised of only three swimmers with Benoy, O’Melia and Thaddeus Heck in the 3×100 breaststroke relay (3:58.35) and Devon Gaber, David King and Martin Hoger in the 3×100 backstroke relay (3:28.05). Benoy, Heck, Gaber and King also placed third in the 400 individual medley relay (4:37.74).

The Hodags added a pair of fourth-place finishes with Hoger, Heck, King and Gaber in the 200 medley relay (1:58.79) and King, Hoger and Heck in the 3X100 butterfly relay (3:30.96).

RHS’s next meet is scheduled for Tuesday at Shawano.
