OBITUARY: Mildred C. Denis
Mildred C. Denis, age 90, of Rhinelander, died Tuesday Nov. 8, 2016. She was born May 3, 1926 in Brainerd, Minn. to Evert and Mildred Borders.
Millie was raised in Nisswa, Minn., on the shores of Love Lake and attended a one-room grade school in Nisswa, Brainerd High School and Nicolet College in Rhinelander to get her teacher’s aid certification.
Millie married Peter Denis on Feb. 6, 1945 and together they raised their family of four children. Millie was a wonderful mother and grandmother. She enjoyed many trips to their second home in Brainerd, and although Rhinelander was her home for most of her life, a bit of her heart always remained in the Brainerd area. Millie loved picnics, and boating at Lake Tomahawk picnic area or Clear Lake with her family. Millie loved the company of children, which influenced her first career as a Rhinelander crossing guard ensuring the safety of children at the corner of Lincoln Street and Oneida Avenue here in Rhinelander. After receiving her certification at Nicolet College, she was employed in the Rhinelander School District as a Title I teache’rs aid for approximately 15 years at various schools. She was involved in an administration position at North Star Steel Fabricating Inc., for many years, after she retired from the school district. She was also a long time member of the St. Mary’s Parish Women’s Club, and served as president. She was an avid baker. Her cinnamon rolls were legendary, and her cookie jar was always full. Millie will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved her.
Mildred is survived by two daughters, Linda (Roger) Gaber of Marshville, N.C., and Jeanne (Wally) Pilbeam of Rhinelander; two sons, Michael (Mary) and Mark (Mary) both of Rhinelander; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren and a great-great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her husband Peter; a grandson, Jason Gaber; her parents, Evert and Mildred Borders; her sisters, Hazel, Lucy, Eve and Juanita, and her brothers, Pat, Ike and Dave.
