Rhinelander Rebels lose season opener to Lakeland

After being tied 3-3 after three innings Wednesday, the Rhinelander Rebels Legion baseball team wasn’t able to score again and ended up losing the season opener at home to Lakeland, 9-3.
Kurt Zuiker pitched the first four innings for the Rebels and recorded the loss, allowing five runs, two earned, on five hits with five walks while striking out four. Nick Spencer relieved Zuiker and worked the final three innings, giving up three earned runs out of the four scored on two hits with two walks and a hit batter with three strikeouts.
Lakeland’s TJ Ullius pitched the first four innings and recorded the victory, allowing three runs, two earned, on six hits with four walks and a strikeout. Jacob Pagels closed out the final three innings without giving up a run on three hits with a walk.
Nine different batters accounted for Rhinelander’s nine hits, of which the only multiple-base hits were doubles from Tyler Blomdahl and Cole Spaulding.
Lakeland’s seven hits included a pair of doubles from Caleb Menzia, who also drove in four runs, and an RBI double by Brett Slavinsky.
The Rebels’ next game is Friday at Tomahawk.
