Aschenbrenner part of undefeated Badger novice rowing team

RHS 2015 grad and stand-out athlete Riley Aschenbrenner walked on to a sport at UW-Madison last year; a sport in which she had never before participated, but now loves.
“I was going to join the cross country ski team my senior year in high school and the coach (Charil Ries) suggested rowing to me,” Aschenbrenner recalled. “She was in the sport at Madison and put me in touch with the (then) assistant coach, who talked to me about walking on.”
As one of 70 or 80 walk-ons for the well-regarded Badger rowing team, the six-foot Aschenbrenner outlasted many, securing a place on one of two novice boats. She rowed in all of the teams competitions, called Regattas, and both novice boats ended the season undefeated.
Part of their success may be due to the team’s chemistry.
“I really started to enjoy spending time with my teammates,” Ashenbrenner said. “I love working hard for something and getting out what I put into it.”
Rowing camp in August is next on her agenda, then back to training with the team. Riley begins her sophomore year at UW-Madison in the fall. She is studying pre-pharmacy.
