OBITUARY: Glen R. Herman
Glen R. Herman, age 51 of Harshaw passed away unexpectedly at his home Sunday, May 22, 2016.
The son of Thomas and Dorothy Herman, he was born Jan. 11, 1965, the youngest of 12 children.
Glen attended Cassian-Woodboro Elementary School and graduated from Rhinelander High School in 1983. He also attended Nicolet College in Rhinelander for two years.
He lived in Harshaw his whole life. He met Mindy (Melinda) Lane 30 years ago this coming fall. They married on Oct. 23, 1993, sharing…their anniversary with his parents and his sister Sharon and her husband.
Glen and Mindy built their home near the family potato farm in Harshaw. Their only son Timothy was born in 2003.
Along with working on the farm all his life, Glen worked many years for Busche Masonry and then briefly worked at Menards in Rhinelander.
He worked about four years for Frito-Lay Research Station in Rhinelander, operating and maintaining machines for planting and harvesting potatoes.
At the time of his death, he was employed by University of Wisconsin-Madison Agricultural Research Station, again operating and maintaining machinery for planting and harvesting potatoes.
As the baby of the family, Glen’s kittywampus sense of humor kept the others off-balance. He had a talent for all things mechanical, and people — both at work and at home — relied on him to jump in and solve problems.
He enjoyed doing anything outdoors – planting crops, fishing, trapping and hunting deer, turkeys, pheasants and bear.
Nearly 20 years ago, the farm added Christmas trees and wreathes to its crops. Glen especially enjoyed selling the trees and making the roping.
Glen is survived by his wife Mindy; son Tim; mother Dorothy Herman; and mother- and father-in-law Richard and Annette Lane, Harshaw.
He is also survived by nine sisters and brothers: Judith (Roger) Wiff of Spring Valley; John (Jody) Herman of Rhinelander; Sandra (Joel) Herum of River Falls: Cynthia (David) Schmitz of Rhinelander; Peter (Donna) Herman of Menomonie; Sharon (Kenneth) Kremsreiter of Harshaw; Richard (Kelly) Herman of Harshaw; Laura (Robin Capen) Herman of Harshaw; and Gay (Jeff Christensen) Herman of Cottage Grove, Minn., nieces, nephews, other family and many friends.
Glen was preceded in death by his father and two brothers: Ben and Greg.
Glen will be greatly missed by all who loved him. In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer memorials for an education fund for his son Tim.
A memorial service for Glen will be held on Saturday, May 28, 2016 at 2:00 PM at the Carlson Funeral Home with Reverend Hans-Juergen Heisinger officiating. Visitating hours will be from 4:00 to 7:00 PM on Friday, May 27, 2016 and Saturday, May 28, 2016 from 1:00 to 2:00 PM, all at the Carlson Funeral Home.
