UPDATED STORY: Kyle Comer named All-American
STAR JOURNAL REPORT
Kyle Comer, a 2012 Rhinelander High School graduate who recently wrapped up his senior season as a third baseman on the University of Minnesota Duluth baseball team, has received First Team All-American honors from both the NCAA Division II Conference Commissioners Association and National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.
Comer, who was also named to the All-Region First Team, earned his first ever All-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference selection as well in 2016 when he finished his four years at UMD. He tied the Bulldogs’ record with 20 doubles in his senior season and finished sixth nationally with 95 hits. He also finished in the top 15 of all of NCAA Division II in batting average (.435), runs scored (72), runs batted in (71), and total bases (161).
His 71 RBIs matched what was the program’s single season record entering 2016, and he surpassed the previous total bases record for one year while starting all 55 games for UMD. Comer is one of five Bulldogs ever to earn postseason All-American honors. Senior teammate and first baseman Alex Wojciechowski also made the First Team this season and was named the National Player of the Year.
The Bulldogs finished the season 39-16 overall and advanced to the NCAA Division II Tournament.
