OBITUARY: THOMAS C. SCHMIDT
Thomas C. Schmidt, age 80, of Rhinelander, died March 10, 2016, at his home, surrounded by his family. He was born Aug. 31, 1935, in Milwaukee to Cyril and Caroline (Prybil) Schmidt. Tom attended schools in Milwaukee, graduating from Messmer High School in 1953. In 1954 he enlisted in the Army and served until honorably discharged in 1956. He returned to Milwaukee and on Oct. 19, 1957, he married Patricia Kukus. They made their home in the Milwaukee/Port Washington area, where Tom was employed by Western Electric until retiring in 1986. They then moved to Rhinelander, where he went to work for Oneida County as a maintenance man for both the courthouse and the Oneida County Sherriff’s Department. He was employed by the county for a little over 10 years. Tom was a member of the American Legion and the Communication Workers of America, and he was proud of being one of the measuring stations for the Hodag Musky Challenge each year. He enjoyed many hobbies which included stamp and coin collecting. Tom is survived by his two daughters, Teri (Ron) Hunt of Antigo and Christine (Russell) Flexer of East Peoria, Ill.; two sons, Mark (Robin) Schmidt of Saukville and Steve (Karen Oftedahl) Schmidt of Port Washington; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; other family and many friends. Tom was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia, on Feb. 1, 2009; his parents; and his sister, Darlene. Visitation and funeral services will be held Saturday, March 19, at Carlson Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m., with the funeral services at 11 a.m. Chaplain John Uhlarik will officiate. Interment will follow in Northland Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, a memorial is being established in Tom’s name for the Town of Pelican Volunteer Fire Dept. (Carlson Funeral Home)
