Zombie Prom kicks off the Halloween season
It’s not the monster mash, but the Zombie Prom that will be bringing spooky characters out into the night next weekend.
Rhinelander ArtStart is hosting the second annual event Saturday, Oct. 18, at 8 p.m. Last year drew “zombies” ages 15 to 80 who showed up in costume; many signed up for free zombie makeovers which will be available again this year.
“We thought we would be the first to kick off the Halloween season with one of the community’s favorite events. We are hosting Zombie Prom on Saturday this year which should draw a big crowd of Halloween fans,” Judi Linder, ArtStart Co-Events Coordinator, said.
The zombie trend is fueled by the many current TV shows and films featuring a zombie storyline, but the prom theme originates from the off-Broadway musical Zombie Prom. The musical is based on a 1950’s comic book of the same name that was made into a play and then brought to the off-Broadway stage in the ‘90’s.Zombie prom events have sprung up in many major cities including Chicago and Philadelphia.
“Don’t worry if you don’t have a costume because prom-goers can get a zombie makeover at the party, or just come as your scary self,” Linder said. She added, “It’s all in good fun and a great way to support the arts in our community.”
A complimentary snack buffet and cash bar will be available, and dance music will be provided by a DJ. Admission is by donation to ArtStart at the door, and all proceeds will benefit ArtStart exhibitions, cultural events, and children’s art programs. Those attending may also view the photographic exhibitions In a New Lignt: A Photographic Journey of Transformation and Room and Board: The Bedroom and Weeknight Dinners, by Lois Bielefeld, currently on display in the ArtStart galleries. ArtStar is located at 68 S. Stevens St., downtown Rhinelander.
