Viewpoint: Writer applauds Gov. Walker
Editor:
I would like to thank Governor Walker for his recent visits to the Northwoods. On July 30, he visited the Wildwood Wildlife Park in Minocqua; the week before, he lead a tour to the Rhinelander Visitors Center with dozens of his Harley rider friends; and on July 2, he visited the Vilas County business incubator in Manitowish Waters. On all his visits he was able to meet and talk to many locals. We truly appreciate his support for all local employers.
In some other good news, Nicolet College just received a state grant to teach students the skills that will be needed to work here in the Northwoods for further economic development. This helps ensure that our children will be able to stay home with good jobs. They will not be forced to leave the area they love. It also encourages employers to build businesses here.
On July 31, the state Supreme Court upheld the governor’s Act 10 law in a suit filed by the Madison Teachers Union. This should have been the last attempt to stop the law from taking effect. We are fortunate that we have been enjoying its benefits for over a year now. Last year, Northland Pines saved over one million dollars by being able to shop for insurance while not being forced to use Public Employee Union insurance. This year we are saving an additional $100,000. It’s too bad that Madison citizens haven’t been as fortunate. Their school board, with Mary Burke as a member, has refused to incorporate Act 10. In fact, they recently signed a contract that effectively postpones the benefits of Act 10 for another two years. I wonder what Mary Burke would do as governor? Would she refuse to enforce the laws she dislikes such as her leader, President Obama, is doing with our immigration laws?
Thanks again, Governor Walker.
