Lake of the Torches raises money for Northwoods Charities
Lake of the Torches Resort Casino raised $16,110 for area charities during a spectacular day of sportsmanship and goodwill as part of the Carry the Torch Charity Fundraiser Thursday, Sept. 19, at the historic Gateway Gun Club and Lodge in Land O’ Lakes.
The event marked the fourth year in which Carry the Torch participants competed in trap and sporting clay competitions at the Gateway Gun Club, which is recognized as one of the premier shooting facilities in the Midwest. The Lakeland Pantry, the Northcentral Wisconsin Chapter of the American Red Cross, the Northwoods United Way and the Lac du Flambeau Youth Center will each receive more than $4,000 from the event.
As part of the day-long event, four-time All-American trap champion John Muir, who shot professionally in competitions with the Winchester Firearms Company for 10 years, led participants in demonstrations of safe gun handling and proper shooting techniques.
Muir and his professional staff also organized and conducted the trap and sporting clay competitions held throughout the morning and afternoon. The sporting clay competition involved five separate shooting stations, each of which depicted a different type of shooting scenario found in hunting-including waterfowl, game birds and shooting at simultaneous targets.
“We sincerely appreciate this donation as part of the Carry the Torch Fundraiser. This donation will go towards our mission of promoting emergency preparedness and responding to disasters and fires,” Diane Dahlke of the Northcentral Wisconsin Chapter of the American Red Cross, said.
The Lakeland Pantry will use the donation to help pay for its weekly distribution of food and other necessities to about 2,000 families in the Lakeland area. The Northwoods United Way will use its portion of the proceeds to help fund 25 agencies that provide basic health and services for residents in the area. And, the Lac du Flambeau Youth Center will use its share of the proceeds to provide athletic programs and activities for about 600 youth in the Lac du Flambeau area.
“This donation will help us provide basic health needs for the residents in the counties that we serve. We thank Lake of the Torches and participants for all their support,” Nancy Sattler of the Northwoods United Way said.
For the past two years, Lake of the Torches received national recognition for its hosting of the Carry the Torch Classic Fundraiser at the annual Casino Marketing Conference in Las Vegas. The conference has awarded the Carry the Torch fundraiser a gold Romero award and a honorable mention during the past two years. The Romero Awards honor the most significant achievements in casino marketing and are considered the gold standard in the industry.
“During the past four years, Carry the Torch has raised thousands of dollars for Northwood charities and we sincerely thank everyone for their generosity and participation. It is a wonderful opportunity for us to come together to enjoy a day of camaraderie, sport and charity,” Lake of the Torches Director of Marketing Leana Schlecht said.
