Because diabetes is increasing by large numbers each year, the Wisconsin Lions Foundation and local Lions clubs are promoting Diabetes Alert Day throughout the state. The Rhinelander Lions will distribute materials pertaining to diabetes awareness from March 17 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Rhinelander ShopKo Store.
Almost 25.8 million people in the United States have diabetes, or 8.3 percent of the population. While an estimated 18.8 million have been diagnosed, one-fourth are unaware they have this disease. In Wisconsin 1.46 million adults have pre-diabetes. The earlier diabetes is detected, the easier it is to control.
