Birmingham to appear at Rhinelander District Library
The Rhinelander District Library finishes its popular 2012 Author Series on Thursday, Nov. 15, at 2 p.m. with a presentation on “The Effigy Mounds of Wisconsin” by Robert Birmingham, a Wisconsin author and archaeologist. With a slide show, he will discuss the effigy mounds in Wisconsin, as well as his book, Spirits of Earth: the Effigy Mound Landscape of Madison and the Four Lakes.
According to University of Wisconsin Press, “Between A.D. 700 and 1100 Native Americans built more effigy mounds in Wisconsin than anywhere else in North America, with an estimated 1,300 mounds-including the world’s largest known bird effigy…”
Birmingham was Wisconsin State Archaeologist at the Wisconsin Historical Society for 15 years and is currently a lecturer at UW-Waukesha. He has written extensively about the effigy mounds in Wisconsin built by ancient Native American societies. His work includes articles as well as three books: Spirits of Earth: The Effigy Mound Landscape of Madison and the Four Lakes; Indian Mounds of Wisconsin, co-authored with Leslie E. Eisenberg (awarded the Elizabeth A. Steinberg Prize); and Aztalan: Mysteries of an Ancient Indian Town, co-authored with Lynn G. Goldstein.
Refreshments will be served. Funding for this event is provided by Northern Arts Council. Call the Rhinelander District Library at (715) 365-1070 with any questions.
