Vilas County holds successful hazardous waste collection
Vilas County Zoning, in conjunction with the Oneida County Solid Waste Department, held a hazardous waste collection at the Lac du Flambeau Transfer Station on July 20 and 21. The collection was set up in the Northern Hornshoe Snowmobile Club building for easy pull through service. One of two collections scheduled in Vilas County this year, these collections allow area residents to dispose of hazardous household materials for a small fee.
Thanks to the environmentally conscious area residents, the crew was able to collect more than 2,900 pounds of flammables such as paint, 50 gallons of used motor oil and 275 pounds of other hazardous materials like insect or weed killer, among other things. That is over three tons of hazardous materials that didn’t end up in lakes, rivers, streams, or the groundwater.
Special thanks to the Town of Lac du Flambeau and their Transfer Site Attendant Pete and to the Northern Hornshoe Snowmobile Club for the use of their fantastic facilities and their generous hospitality.
Residents are reminded that the next collection will be at the Vilas County Fairgrounds Commercial Building in Eagle River on August 3-4.
